Compare:
1/ I went to NYC three times last year (it’s finished)
2/ I’ve been to NYC three times this year (the year is not finished).
In sentence 1/, it’s about last year. It’s the past, we don’t use the present perfect.
In sentence 2/, it’s about this year, not finished, so we use the present perfect.
Remember :
It’s the past?
With « yesterday », « last week », « last year », we use the preterit.
It start in the past?
With « since + yesterday / last week / last year », we use the present perfect.
I’ve been here since this morning.
She’s worked here for 2 years.
