Past simple: « to do »: I did
We use the Past Simple to refer about completed actions in the past.
Past Simple: Construction: Regular verbs:
very often, the past simple ends are in -ed (or -d, or -ied) (regular verbs).
to look => looked, to hope => hoped, to study => studied,
I work (today) in a web agency. Before, I worked in a cinema.
I invited him, but he decided not to come.
Peter passed his exam because he studied hard.

the past simple ends is not in -ed:
be -> was, do -> did, come -> came, give -> gave, go -> went, have -> had, make -> made,
see -> saw, write -> wrote,
Past Simple: We use it to refer about completed actions in the PAST:
about a period of time:
I lived in New York for seven years.
We were in London from Monday to Thursday of last week.
about a specific point in time:
I saw him in the street.
He came back last Monday.
with TIME expressions:
yesterday, the day before, four days ago,
three weeks ago, for 6 weeks,
last month, from March to June,
last year, in 2002, in the 1980s,
in the last century, for a long time, in the past.
Past Simple: Interrogative and negative forms: use did/didn’t + infinitive
I write Did you write the letter? I didn’t write the letter.
You see Did you see the movie? I didn’t see the movie.
He learn Did your learn your lesson? I didn’t learn the lesson.
[Write, see, learn are the main verb in the sentence]
DO is the main verb in the sentence? We can use did and DO.
What did you do Friday evening? I didn’t do anything.
BE: the past of BE is was/were
Past Simple: Affirmative – Negative – Question:
I was late You were late He/She/It was late We were late – You were late They were late | I wasn’t late You weren’t late He wasn’t late We weren’t late You weren’t late They weren’t late | Was I late ? Were you late? Was he/she/it late? Were you late? Were you late? Were they late? |
With was/were, we don’t use did!
